Joseph Tany Yos, a painter – sculptor all his life, manifested in Tel Aviv in 1950.
Yos sees himself as a truly modern, 21st century artist, naturally observing and working with the parameters of his ancestors-mentors: Rembrandt van Rijn, Gustave Courbet, Paul Bonnard, Vassily Kandinsky, Georges Braque, Chaim Soutine and others, Poets, Authors, Play Writers, Musicians and Spirituals. He has worked, studied and exhibited in Tel Aviv, Paris, London, Barcelona and New York City. His latest big showing was at The Attic, the crown jewel gallery space in Santa Cruz California, through January 2008. Some twenty years back Yos discovered a grand open arena, a context in which the work, combining expressioned human figuratives and questionable abstractions. First, there is struggle between components on the canvas. Struggle builds into conflict; then catastrophe, which yields solutions, harmony, bliss. Serious inquiry into the paintings reveals a way out.
These works Yos labels ‘Two to One’. They can be particularly arresting to their intended viewer, the initiated, being not conceived for merely casual observing. Containing the dynamism of actual war they can be read on many levels and in many contexts, speaking both to the acculturated and the intuitive mystic alike. This suite of work ‘Two to One’ is confrontive, pregnant with meaning to the contemplative. Stage by stage, discovery crowding discovery, Yos watches all his conflicts becoming increasingly manageable, even soluble, yielding a bliss. He is buoyed-up, hopeful, steady and ready as he looks to a new dawn.
